The Portuguese Ecological Society (SPECO), with the support of the European Ecological Federation (EEF) have, since 2017, celebrated and promoted Ecology Day around the globe on the 14th of September. On this day, ecologists will gather to show new and regular activities to connect Ecology with society and to promote their role on the build out of solutions towards a sustainable human development.
Ecology Day promotes worldwide initiatives regarding ecology with the perspective of bringing it closer to society and highlighting its importance on our daily lives. Officially launched by EEF after the celebration of the Ecology’s 150th anniversary in 2016, in Brussels, the Ecology Day has been coordinated by SPECO, in close association with EEF, since 2017. Due to the recognition of it’s importance, in Portugal, Ecology Day has been endorsed with the High Patronage of the National Commission of UNESCO.
In 2020 an online platform was launched and designed to share all the activities promoted by partners in different countries and to increase the dissemination of all the important activities of this day. The website will integrate all the initiatives scattered around the world elevating their reach.
The date, September 14th, honors the day in which Ernst Haeckel published Ökologie und Chorologie in 1866, coining the term “Ecology”.
As in previous years, activities can be on-site. However, and due to SARS-CoV2 pandemic, we encourage the possibility of an online celebration, by creating and developing online activities that can be seen and shared by everyone.
To share an activity, online or not, you just need to go to the website fill the form and your activity will be shared and be visible to everyone who visits.
If there is one date to highlight activities and show best practices in the area of Ecology and Environment around the world, that date is the 14th of September, on Ecology Day.
